Symptoms of Stomach Acid Disease

When stomach acid rises, the walls of the esophagus and mouth can become irritated. This condition can cause a sour taste in the back of the mouth and a burning sensation in the chest (heartburn) with or without shortness of breath.

Both symptoms occur mainly after eating and can get worse when the patient is lying down or bending over.

In addition to a sour taste in the back of the mouth and heartburn, acid reflux disease or GERD also experiences the following symptoms:
  • Bad breath
  • A lumpy sensation in the throat, especially when swallowing
  • Easy to fill
  • Often burps and the voice becomes hoarse
  • Sore throat that doesn't go away and pain when swallowing
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Chronic cough without phlegm, especially at night
Symptoms of acid reflux occur more often at night, causing difficulty sleeping. GERD can also cause asthma symptoms and inflammation of the vocal cords (laryngitis).

When to go to the doctor

GERD or gastric acid disease is at risk for obesity. Therefore, discuss with a nutritionist regarding a healthy diet to lose weight. Pregnant women also often experience GERD. Therefore, consult a gynecologist if you experience the above symptoms.

Everyone can experience symptoms of acid reflux, especially after eating large amounts of food, and eating foods that are difficult to digest, or foods that increase stomach acid production, such as fatty, spicy, and sour foods.

However, this condition does not always indicate a person has GERD or acid reflux disease. Acid reflux is only considered a disease if these symptoms occur at least twice a week.

Symptoms of acid reflux disease that only occur 1-2 times a month also do not require treatment from a doctor. This condition can be overcome by changing your diet and taking over-the-counter ulcer medications to relieve symptoms.

You are advised to see a doctor if the symptoms of acid reflux occur continuously and do not improve. Examination is also necessary if you experience vomiting in large quantities, especially if the vomit contains blood.

If you experience chest pain that radiates to your jaw and arms along with shortness of breath and cold sweat, go to the emergency room of the nearest hospital. These symptoms can signal a heart attack, so don't think of it as an ordinary heartburn.
